Thomas Gray (b. 2004) is an emerging composer currently studying at the Elder Conservatorium of Music in Adelaide. Originally from Townsville, North Queensland, Thomas’ composition teachers have so far have included Charles Bodman Rae, Anne Cawrse and Dylan Crismani, and he has also studied composition and clarinet with Mark Smith.

In 2024, Thomas’s first string quartet, Perfume, was premiered by the Australian String Quartet, and was awarded first place in the ASME (SA) Young Composer’s Competition. In 2019 his work Hope for piano duet was awarded second place in the ASME Young Composer’s Competition (QLD) and in 2018, Thomas’ work The Forest for mixed ensemble was shortlisted for the Score-It Film Scoring Competition (QLD). Thomas’ music has also been featured in Escape Academy’s escape rooms.

From an early age, Thomas has been fascinated by the relationships between storytelling and music. At a young age Thomas was introduced to Celtic music by Megan Donnelly, who encouraged him to learn tin whistle and join the Celtic Strings ensemble at school, starting Thomas’ continuing passion for Celtic music. Thomas has been using his time at university to explore the rich tapestry of music and to begin developing his own musical style.
